Q:
Hi, I just have a question about my black raspberry plant. Should it spread out at some point, or does it just grow straight up? Right now it's just grown straight up and is about three feet tall. I have it loosely tied to a stick to hold it up. Is there anything I should be doing with it to make it spread out more? I'm pretty new to growing plants so any help or advice you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:
It will spread as it gets older.
"Blackberry roots are perennial, but the canes themselves are biennial. Canes begin to grow one season, when they are called “primocanes,” produce fruit the second season on canes called “floricanes,” and then die. At any given time, blackberries will have canes in different stages of growth. The berries grow on shorter offshoots on the floricanes. To reduce powdery mildew in blackberries, cut two-year-old canes to the ground after they finish producing each season." from https://homeguides.sfgate.com/growth-stages-blackberry-plant-56331.html where there is much more information.

Q:
Are there thorns on this bush and if so, are the berries difficult to pick?

A:
There are thorns. You should wear long-sleeved shirts and pants if the thorns seem too intimidating, but they are picked fairly easily.
