Great tree for yards. Shiny foliage is first to turn brilliant reds in fall. Fruits are eaten by many kinds of birds & wildlife, including wood ducks and turkeys.

Height: 60 to 80 feet
Space: 20 to 40 feet

I am going to replace an ash tree that has the emerald boar (?) disease with a black gum, but may not be cutting the ash tree down for a couple of years. Can I plant the black gum in a large pot for the time being? Thanks.

A:
Yes, that should be alright. You might move it to a protected area over winter so that it doesn't freeze too hard.

A:
Yes. Male and female flowers occur on separate trees. Ours are grown from seed, so we do not know which are which.

Q:
In moving a (black gum) tree that's staying in a pot for a few years into a "protected area" during the winter months, is bringing it inside our house okay? Or if it should/can stay outside, please describe what a protected area means. Thanks!

A:
Ours stay outdoors all winter. You could overwinter the pot against the sunny side of your house and help insulate it with a pile of leaves.
