Delightful, late-blooming blue flowers
I absolutely adore this native! I planted it in a sunny, north-facing flat area that gets a little afternoon shade (almost no shade around midsummer) in clay soil. This had numerous bumblebees the entire time it was blooming (which for me was late August through early October)! The bees seemed especially pleased in later September, before the asters started blooming. The flowers start from the base & open towards the ends of the flower spikes. It was a rich, vivid blue, just like this picture. The flowers have a very fun, funky tube shape like a mouth. The white spots help with the mouth image, like goofy teeth. It needed a little more water than its neighbors, but that was mostly me desperately wanting it to survive during the very dry summer. I'm generally **very stingy** with watering my garden (I buy plants that I know will survive my neglect), so when I say I watered it more, I mean I watered it as much as a normal water-conserving gardener would water non-natives. I am very much looking forward to seeing it again this year!
