POTTED PLANTS
Good color companions are sweet coneflower (R. subtomentosa) and royal catchfly (S. regia). Pinch tops once in June to keep plants shorter.

Questions and Answers
This is a beautiful, blue-flowered plant with a long blooming period (most of August and September). The plants will grow four to six feet tall, but can be pinched back until late July to keep them shorter. Pinching off tops or pulling off the seeds when the stems are almost finished blooming will stimulate new flowers in October.
This is a striking plant for the summer and fall seasons in dry, sunny locations. It offers a nice contrast to the yellow goldenrods that are also blooming at this time.
Uses: Deer & drought resistant, showy flowers, bees, butterflies, humming birds

late-season feast!
Beware this thing can grow to 6' tall and looks scraggly when planted alone. I typically trim it back in mid summer to encourage a slightly shorter, more bushy look. It also can be a tad aggressive in a flower bed. Probably not a good choice for a formal-type garden, but in a meadow/prairie plot they're a wonderful late-season bloomer that attracts many bumblebees and hummingbirds! Would look great intermingled with big bluestem and goldenrods.

Q:
I planted one potted plant last year and this year I have about 10 new plants all over the garden! I assume this is self seeding and not spreading, correct?

A:
Correct. It spreads by seed, not underground runners.

Q:
I saved about 10-15 seeds to plant around the front of my house. Will these need to be cold stratified? Or can I just start them in March with my other seeds? Thanks

Q:
I had success with the fall planting of the Star Ticksed. This year I want to do this Salvia and the Cardinal flower in groups of six, but firest I have to dig up some nativar tall coneflowers. I would like to get plants OCT 15 and plant by Halloween, I use a plastic cloche to protect them all fall, winter-spring and take it off after the cloche is filled by the plant. Do you see any problem putting the roots in the ground around the time of the first freeze? Can I order and have them arrive 10.15.21? Thanks

A:
Your plan sounds reasonable. The roots should be fine if planted in October. You can order now and have them arrive the week of Oct 15,
