The plants in the group vary a little from year to year based on what we have in stock. In 2016, the group will consist of a blazing star species, garden phlox, a milkweed, purple coneflower, an aster, wild bergamot, slender mountain mint, joe pye weed, blue sage, and a coreopsis.

We try to keep the large and small groups the same, but it all varies with our inventory. You can list species you would prefer to receive in the comments section during checkout (list the milkweed, blazing star, or other nonspecific plant that you would like).

The quart pot plants will have a larger root structure and, perhaps, a higher likelihood of blooming the first year (depends on the species).

Accepted Answer

This group, generally, will grow in full sun and shouldn't need to be watered after they are established. Some of the plants listed are not specified down to the species. For example, you will receive one of five different blazing star species that we carry. You can request a certain species, and if we have it, we'll use the one you request. We have several Rudbeckia species; some grow in harsh, dry conditions while others prefer to be fairly wet. If your growing conditions are dry, you can specify that you "prefer drier species chosen for the butterfly group" when you're ordering online. There is a comment section on the checkout page for this type of detail. If you give us these details, we can try to select plants that are suitable for your garden.

Now is a good time to plant nearly all of the plants that we sell. Your pots should have a surface area of about 25 square feet for our plant groupings. Also, this group will contain some species that may get too tall for a pot and tend to lean quite a bit. No. You can find spacing suggestions and plant height on the tags that come with the plants. This should help you determine where to plant them. Generally, taller and bigger plants are placed in the center or back of flowerbeds. Small plants are placed at the outer edges of beds.

They can be planted year round. Our plants are not kept in heated greenhouses, so they are pretty much dormant right now (February). They would be fine in a window.

When in stock, you can usually order as many butterfly weed as you want. The Plant Groupings are designed to encourage novices and native plant enthusiasts to add diversity to their plantings.
