Cardinal flower will grow best in soil rich with organic material and may need to be watered during dry periods. Hummingbirds and yellow butterflies find cardinal flower irresistable.

Mrs.
This is absolutely the most wonderful native to bloom in our light shade garden in August! When the rest of the flowers are getting a little heat stressed and tired, the bright red blooms are electric.

Gardener
I bought this plant as a wee baby this past spring and wondered how it would ever survive in my mostly sunny, clay garden. A couple of my wild flower plants did not like it. But this plant seems hardy. It is now August and it has grown to be 2 feet tall and is blooming just as in the picture. The hummingbirds have already visited it several times. I plan to get more next spring.

The Hummingbirds love these!
I bought my Cardinal flowers from Missouri Wildflowers Nursery. They are probably 15 years old now and still going strong! This year, I even have a few volunteers in other parts of the garden.

Q:
how many plants in a small pot

A:
Usually just one. If there is more than one, the fibrous root systems will be intertwined and difficult to separate (but it can be done)..
