Description
Questions and Answers
Pale lavender or white flowers appear long after most other woodland species have finished blooming or gone dormant. Elephantsfoot is tolerant of fairly dry conditions and is often neglected by deer. It is a tough, opportunistic plant that can form small colonies in sites where it can get a foothold.
A creative gardener might use this plant as a knee-high groundcover in lightly shaded or heavily shaded areas that are just beyond the water hose's reach.
Uses: fall color, medicinal, bees, butterflies, drought tolerant, deer tolerant, ground cover
Bloom time: August - September
Height: 10 to 18 inches
Space: 10 to 18 inches
Sun: light sun to full shade
Moisture: average
Q:
What would cause an Elephant's Foot to vanish into thin air? I discovered two under an old maple tree, blooming in deep shade. Neither returned, though one I think was mowed down at the wrong time. These are perennials, aren't they? Thanks. I think they are valuable for wild species though the boom is tiny. They are a fun plant.

A:
They are perennials. It's hard to say why they disappeared--lack of water, too much water, predation?

Q:
What is the best time to plant Elephants foot? Is it ok to plant them in December in St. Louis?

A:
They are pretty hardy, so you can probably plant them any time of year (they are typically dormant in December). The "best" time would be March - June or Sept - Nov.

Q:
How does this plant spread. I marked a few volunteers and they grow rather tall over time and have pleasant appearance and the bright white blooms are visible from quite a distance. Numerous very small flying bugs and bees are coming to the plant. It is a good bug magnet for migrating hummingbirds in our yard in early September. Even the smaller plants that we noticed that are popping up in the lawn, if protected, seem to bloom at a low height. Maybe they have been around but never noticed and mowed down in the past. Has anyone ever tried moving these plants in the spring by digging them up? (Not from "the wild" of course, but in your garden or lawn. Do they spread by runners? Thanks.

A:
They spread by seed. You can relocate plants in the spring before they start growing too much or in the fall as they are going dormant. It is a very tough plant and tolerates repeated mowing in lawns, though this can also prevent it from flowering.
