Description
Questions and Answers
Deciduous holly, or possum haw, is a large shrub or small tree usually growing 10 to 15 feet tall. It tolerates a wide range of growing conditions, but will do best in full sun. Unlike other hollies that are evergreen, deciduous holly sheds its leaves in the fall. This is a species whose individual plants have either male or female flowers. They are tiny and whitish and will attract nectar-seeking bees. The female plants will produce spectacular red berries in September or October if a male plant is nearby and will persist through winter or until they are consumed by birds.
Uses: Birds, bees, fall color
Bloom time: April - May
Height: up to 30 feet
Space: 5 to 12 feet
Sun: Full sun to medium shade
Moisture: Dry to moist

Q:
I’m on the waitlist for ilex decidua. I need both a male and female, is that possible to request? Do you grow any specific variety?
Asked by:
Tara
- 12/31/2021
A:
You do need a male and female. Because ours are grown from seed, we won't know which are male or female until they bloom. It can take a couple of years for them to bloom in our pots. If we ever have enough in stock that have been identified as male or female, those buying options would be incorporated into the website so you could indicate which you'd like.
Ours are grown from wild populations found in central Missouri.

Q:
Assume you would need both a male and female plant in order to produce berries. When I order do I need to order both a male and a female and if so how do I specify that need on the order?

Q:
I'd like to get some deciduous holly plants and have none nearby as we are about 90 minutes' drive north of their native range. I would need a male to make sure we have berries, and I wondered if you had male plants.
Asked by:
Kirsten
- 3/4/2021
A:
We are currently out of stock. We grow them from seed, so we don't know if they are male or female. It can take a few years for them to mature enough to produce flowers, at which point you can tell which are which.

Q:
I found Ilex decidua- female doesn't it need a male? am I just looking in wrong place?
Asked by:
Anne A Harvey
- 4/7/2021
A:
You need a male plant to provide pollen and a female plant to produce berries. We are currently out of stock and are unlikely to know which are male or female when we do have them in stock.

Q:
does the deciduous holly come with a male for pollination?
Asked by:
evelyn m whitmore
- 7/27/2021
A:
No, we rarely know which of our plants are male or female. We grow them from seed and it takes a few years before they flower, which is how we tell which is which.
