Dutchman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria)

This spring ephemeral is very showy with its oddly shaped white flowers, which are an important nectar source for bees early in the year. Its feathery foliage is also attractive. Dutchman's breeches is is unlikely to be eaten by deer or rabbits.

The seeds ripen in late April or early May and should be sown as soon as possible. Sow the seeds in a shaded area with rich organic soil for best results. They will germinate the following spring and should be big enough to flower in about 3 years. The seeds have a fleshy attachment called an elaiosome. Ants will carry the seeds back to their nest in order to eat the nutritious elaiosome, and then discard the seeds. This dispersal method helps ensure the seeds find their way to nutrient-rich soil in which to germinate.
