Description

Eastern gamagrass is a perennial, warm-season grass distantly related to corn. It is long-lived and can live up to 50 years. Habitats in Missouri include prairies, glades, and savannas, though gamagrass can also be found on the borders of forests and woods. Grasshoppers will feed on the foliage and provide a food source for birds. This large, clumping, bunchgrass provides cover for wildlife. Its substantial root system can penetrate clay soils and form extensive channels. Flower spikes contain both female and male flowers on the same plant and are quite showy when in bloom. Large, edible seeds are formed from July through September.
