Description
Common hop sedge is a large, clump-forming, grass-like plant with showy spikelets of achenes (seed clusters). A variety of insects use the plant, either as food or cover or both. The insects in turn feed birds, frogs, and other wildlife. The seeds are also a valuable food source for wildlife.
Uses: Ornamental, butterflies, deer tolerant, birds
Bloom time: June - Sept
Height: 2 to 3.5 feet
Space: 1.5 to 2.5 feet
Sun: Sun to medium shade
Moisture: moist to wet
Seed: Most seed is dormant and will need 6 weeks or more of cold moist stratification.
