Questions and Answers
Potted plants not available.
Indian paintbrush is a biennial Missouri native. During its first year, it forms a small set of basal leaves. The following year it blooms and produces seed. It is a hemiparasitic plant that receives a portion of its nutrients from a broad range of host plants. Because it relies on other plants and is a biennial, we do not grow potted plants. Most years we have seed available and usually include it in our seed mixes.

Q:
What companion plant does Indian Paintbrush have to grow with?

A:
I'm not sure that there is any one particular species that it needs. That is good news and means that as long as there are some other native plants nearby, paintbrush should be able to grow.
Indian paintbrush has "a very broad host range that includes everything from grasses to prairie forbs, and woody plants, and studies have shown that plants will even attempt to form haustoria on inert objects, such as pebbles and organic remains of dead plants." --Steyermark's Flora of Missouri, volume 3, by George Yatskievych
