Questions and Answers
Passion flower, also known as Maypops, is a vine with very unique, fragrant flowers. It climbs via tendrils and will do nicely on a fence or trellis. Planting passion flower in a flower bed is discouraged because it spreads through underground rhizomes and will quickly dominate the other plants in the bed.
It is a host plant for several butterflies, including the gulf fritillary. The edible fruits (sometimes called maypops) are edible. The plant has been used medicinally for a variety of minor ailments.
In Missouri, passion flower will die back to the ground over winter and come up from rhizomes once the temperatures are warm enough the next spring. In areas where the winters are warmer, the vine becomes more woody and one year's growth will still be alive the next year.
Uses: Edible, medicinal, butterflies, showy flowers, vine
Bloom time: June to August
Height: Up to 25 feet, but in much of MO only 10 to 12 feet
Space: 3 to 5 feet
Sun: Full sun to light shade
Moisture: Dry to moist
Q:
I planted a passion flower on a trellis this year, and I am not sure what to do with it for winterizing. Do I cut it to the ground? Or like some clematis, clip it back to the vine? Thank you! Leisa

A:
You can cut it to the ground or leave whatever growth it achieved this year so that next year's growth will have something to grab onto. Passion flower typically dies to the ground every year and sends up new vines from underground runners.

Q:
Your description discourages from planting in flower beds; would large containers work well to keep it from spreading via rhizomes?

A:
Possibly. We have not tried it in a large container, but passion flower (and yellow passion flower) are a bit cold-sensitive. Harsh winters with lots of freezing temps can kill the plants. If you can protect the container over winter (maybe bring it indoors), I suspect the plants will be fine. Note that if you're placing the container on the ground in a flower bed, it will need a barrier between the drainage holes and the ground; the rhizomes will creep through the holes and make their way into the flower bed.
