Description
Passion flower, also known as Maypops, is a vine with very unique, fragrant flowers. It climbs via tendrils and will do nicely on a fence or trellis. Planting passion flower in a flower bed is discouraged because it spreads through underground rhizomes and will quickly dominate the other plants in the bed.
It is a host plant for several butterflies, including the gulf fritillary. The fruits (sometimes called maypops) are edible. The plant has been used medicinally for a variety of minor ailments.
In Missouri, passion flower will die back to the ground over winter and come up from rhizomes once the temperatures are warm enough the next spring. In areas where the winters are warmer, the vine becomes more woody and one year's growth will still be alive the next year.
