Description
Questions and Answers
This species naturally grows near water in sun to light shade, but it also grows prolifically in mulched beds containing lots of organic matter. Southern blue flag is a beardless iris that attracts bees, hummingbirds, and the occasional butterfly. The roots and foliage are mildly toxic, so animals tend to not eat this plant.
Uses: Deer and rabbit resistant, rain gardens, hummingbirds, nectar
Bloom time: May
Height: 30 to 40 inches
Space 18 to 24 inches
Sun: Sun to medium shade
Moisture: Average to moist
Q:
When do you sow the seeds outside? If you're starting them under grow lights first, when would you start them?

A:
They are fairly easy to germinate, but they don't always germinate at the same time. If you sow them outdoors in late summer or fall, many will germinate the following spring and continue to germinate for a year or two after.
If trying to start them indoors, try soaking them really well. Years ago, we pulsed them very briefly (it is easy to over-do it) in a blender to nick the hulls. This will help them absorb moisture. Soak the seeds in water. Change the water every 12 to 24 hours when it turns brownish. Do this for 3 days or so until the water stays fairly clear.
This year, we mixed a cup or two of seeds with very wet, almost muddy soil and put the mixture in a large ziplock bag. We've kept the bag in a refrigerator and will likely take it out in couple of weeks. I suspect this will result in decent germination.
