Description
Questions and Answers
This species naturally grows near water in sun to light shade, but it also grows prolifically in mulched beds containing lots of organic matter. Southern blue flag is a beardless iris that attracts bees, hummingbirds, and the occasional butterfly. The roots and foliage are mildly toxic, so animals tend to not eat this plant.
Uses: Deer and rabbit resistant, rain gardens, hummingbirds, nectar
Bloom time: May
Height: 30 to 40 inches
Space 18 to 24 inches
Sun: Sun to medium shade
Moisture: Average to moist
Seed: Typically has a high dormancy, so it will require at least 2 months of cold, moist stratification if not more. Seed ripens in late August and sits on the ground until germination occurs in late April or May. The following seeding rates should yield about 15 seeds per square foot.
140 seeds per 1/8 oz. packet
1,125 seeds per ounce
1 ounce per 75 square feet
Q:
This spring 2022, a number of native plant folk have observed a white (ours had the faintest hint of blue that it was virtually white) Southern Blue Flag. What could've caused this?
