A compact milkweed with interesting seed pods, foliage, and purple & green flowers.
Milkweeds have seed pods that contain seeds attached to a fine silk. When the pod splits open, the silk catches the breeze and flies away, carrying the seed. During World War II, the silk from the pods was used in life jackets and aviator flight suits.
As with other milkweeds, spider milkweed is prized by the insect world--especially monarchs--and avoided by deer and rabbits.
Uses: deer resistant, drought tolerant, pollinators, showy flowers
Bloom time: June to July
Height: 12 to 26 inches
Space: 18 to 24 inches
Sun: Full sun
Moisture: Dry to average
Seed: Sow seed November - March to stratify (needs at least two to four weeks of cold, moist stratification for best germination, though some seed will germinate with no pre-treatment).

Will this be available as a $2.50 plant, I would like 10. No choice for a waiting list so.....?

A:
We still have some seed available, so the website's waiting list won't kick in until we're completely out. The 2017 seed crop has a high germination rate and very few dormant seeds, so you could try growing from seed. The seeds from this crop shouldn't need any stratification to germinate.
This is one of the milkweeds that we don't like to sell until we've seen signs of new growth in the spring. We can already tell that a majority of our $2.50 size plants didn't make it through the winter. Check back in a couple of weeks to see if quarts are available
If neither size is available this spring, we likely won't have any until late summer or fall.

A:
No. Like other milkweeds, it spreads by seed. The somewhat large seeds are attached to a silky mass of fibers that will carry the seed to new areas as the wind blows. Unlike common milkweed and whorled milkweed, spider milkweed does not spread by underground rhizomes.
