Description
Texas Goldentop will need some extra space; it spreads underground via rhizome and will form a colony of plants over time. This would make it a poor choice for many formal flowerbed situations, though it could work in contained situations such as parking lot islands. That said, if you have the space for it, you'll be impressed with all the pollinators and insects it attracts. It tolerates a range of growing conditions but does best in sunny, dry to moist, sandy soil.
Uses: Pollinators, birds, drought tolerant, erosion
Bloom time: August - September
Height: 1.5 to 4 feet
Space: 12 to 24 inches
Sun: Full sun
Moisture: Dry to moist
Seed: This is a new one for us, and we don't have much experience getting it to germinate. With such a tiny seed, it will need light to germinate so don't bury the seed. It likely doesn't need any special treatment at all, but we've had good germination with a 50 day stratification period. The following seeding rates should deposit about 30 seeds per square foot:
Packets: at least 200 seeds
Seeds per ounce: 308,400
Square feet per ounce: 10,000
