Questions and Answers
The long narrow leaves grow in whorls up the stem of whorled milkweed. Pale green to white flowers attract many insects including several bee species, butterflies, moths, and beneficial wasps. It is a good late season host plant for the monarch butterfly. This species grows from underground stems (rhizomes) and can form colonies. It's an unassuming plant that often goes unnoticed in prairies and glades until the seed pod splits open in the fall and the cottony seed tufts are exposed.
Uses: Deer tolerant, drought tolerant, pollinators
Bloom time: anytime between May and September
Height: 1 to 3 feet
Space: 10 to 20 inches
Sun: Full sun to light shade
Moisture: Dry to average (the better the soil, the more successful the rhizomes)

9 pounds per acre
Q:
I know it can spread by rhizomes but how aggressive will it spread? Will it crowd out other native perennials (star tickseed, purple milkweed, butterfly milkweed, ox-eye sunflower) or will competition keep it from taking over and confine it to it's own area? Planting a flower/milkweed patch of about 250 plants and don't want it to be all whorled milkweed in the future. Thanks!

While we don't have experience with the situation exactly as you have described, it is very unlikely that the whorled milkweed will out-compete the other species that you've listed.

We do sell live plants. Milkweed availability fluctuates throughout the year. This species will be available in limited quantities beginning this week (March 6, 2017).
