Questions and Answers
A fast-growing, small to medium sized shrub that does best in light shade & organic soil, though it grows easily in a wide range of conditions. The white flowers appear on new growth, so wild hydrangea can occasionally be pruned nearly to the ground in late fall or early spring. This will encourage vigorous new stem growth and a nice form later on.
This is a favorite plant for pollinators. Bumble bees race across the flat flower clusters collecting pollen. It is also a larval host plant for the hydrangea sphinx (Darapsa versicolor) and the hydrangea leaf-tier moth (Olethreutes ferriferana).
In cultivation since the 1700's, there are several hydrangea cultivars that produce large, sterile flowers. Our plants are grown from the tiny seeds we collect from populations in Missouri. Wild hydrangea can sometimes spread by short, underground rhizomes.

Gorgeous Flowering Bush!
This arrived as a little twig, less than two years ago. I planted it in the NW side of the fence. This year has exploded in size and for the first time, it bloomed so gorgeously. It gets the worse heat of sun (middle day) and boil the leaves, but right after the sun moves west, it recovers and those huge white heads of flowers make the whole bush look so majestic. For next season, I'll trim it a little so as to keep it tall but bushier. I am so happy it bloom this year, I'll buy two more to expand my moon garden.

Q:
Does the Wild Hydrangea have any wildlife value? And do you have a larger container of it?
Asked by:
Mary Powell
- 4/26/2019
A:
Pollinators love wild hydrangea and I love to watch bees scurry all over the flowers. Our supply changes throughout the year. It's usually available at least in a quart pot. Later in the year, we may have them in gallons and larger.

I have a corner on the north side of my house that is fully shaded with poor dry soil. What is your recommendation for a shrub? I like the wild hydrangea, but wonder if there is a better, more viable option. Thank you!

A:
Hydrangea might work. You could also try maidenbush and Shrubby St. John's wort.

No. There are two subspecies, but we have not bothered to narrow ours down. The main difference between them is leaf pubescence.

Q:
I will need 4 Wild Hydrangea, gallon or larger size, in September. in Soulard (St Louis). Will you have them available in September or do I need to buy them now.? Do you deliver to St. Louis? I would suspedct that you do NOT carry 'Annabelle', is this correct?
Asked by:
CONSTANCE SUYDAM
- 7/21/2021
A:
We should still have them in September. You can buy them now and we can set them aside. You can pick them up at one of the events in St. Louis; Kirkwood Farmers Market is popular. We'll be there September 4 & 11. We do not carry 'annabelle'.
