Questions and Answers
This is a small vine with very attractive foliage, unique yellow flowers and dark purple, marble-sized fruits. The fruits are edible and could be used as a dye; when I squish the fruits to get the seeds, my hands get a beautiful deep purple stain.
Yellow passion flower is a host plant for several butterflies such as the gulf fritillary. Wildflife will eat the fruit; deer tend to leave this plant alone.
Uses: deer resistant, trellis, host plant, pollinators
Bloom time: June - August
Height: 8 to 12 feet
Space: 2 to 4 feet
Sun: Sun to medium shade
Moisture: Average
Q:
I am trying to substantiate the edibility of the fruit on the Yellow Passion Flower. So far looking online has been confusing for this particular species. Can you please point me to a confirming resource? Thank you!!

A:
In my limited experience, the skin of the fruit is unpalatable. If it is removed, the rest of the fruit is favorable. I believe it vaguely tastes like the breakfast cereal Fruity Pebbles. That said, I only tried it once several years ago, and it would take some ingenuity to remove the skins efficiently.

Q:
Does Passiflora lutea do well in containers? I have read that it can sucker aggressively in beds.
Asked by:
Megan
- 5/4/2021
A:
It might, but you'll need to protect it over winter. Both passion flowers we sell can be sensitive to freezing. Yellow passion flower suckers less aggressively (more slowly) than the purple flowered species, but it will move throughout the bed and eventually climb over other plants.

Q:
Are the berries toxic to kids or pets?

A:
I don't know if they are toxic to pets. I've opened the small fruits and removed the seed sac to see what it tasted like. It was alright; but if you eat the whole berry, they are not very good.

Q:
You have let me know that Yellow Passion Flower (Passiflora lutea) is back in stock. Do you think it's safe to plant it now (Zone 7B), or would it be best to wait till next spring? I would really like to have it in my garden. Thanks!
Asked by:
Angela French
- 10/4/2022
A:
It looks like yellow passion flower grows in 7b, so it should be okay. Getting it in the ground and mulching will help keep it insulated over winter.
