Q:Would this tree be appropriate in a full sun location in Hollister, MO?
Asked by: Dixie
- 7/30/2016
A: No, it wouldn't do well in full sun. The leaves will likely turn yellow, and the plant will go dormant earlier than normal. It will do well in direct morning sun for a few hours, but will need shade during the hot afternoon.

Q:How tall is the plant in 1 gallon pot? I know they are hardy to zone 3 but have they already bloomed in Missouri?
Asked by: kathy
- 4/11/2022
A: Right now, they are under 10 inches tall. They are a slow-growing species. Our potted plants are currently not big enough to bloom. Mature plants growing wild or in flowerbeds are blooming now in Missouri.

Q:Do you grow Dirca from seed or another propagation method?
Asked by: Ryan
- 3/12/2020
A: We grow it from seed. The seed ripens in mid-May and, once ripe, quickly falls from the branches. It can easily be missed if you aren't paying attention. We sow the seed within a few days of harvest and wait for it to germinate the following spring, usually in April.

Q:Would it be best to order and plant this tree now in November or order and plant in April? I'm in Iowa, have a perfect semi shade location in a woodland setting. Thank you.
Asked by: Kirstin
- 11/1/2022
A: They are hardy and can be planted now or you can wait until early spring. They grow slowly, so planting them now will give them a head start.

A: Most are about 2 years old. Plants in quart pots are under 6 inches tall. Plants in gallons are less than a foot. These are fairly slow-growing but long-lived.
